Ferry at Fauntleroy SOLD

The ferry between Vashon and Seattle docks at the end of Fauntleroy Road.  The Fauntleroy dock was probably a long way from Seattle when the ferries originally started but now is in the middle of a residential neighborhood.  This is the ferry glimpsed between houses and trees.  This painting is at Silverwood Gallery on Vashon during May and June.

Two Ferries Northend Vashon

A view of the northend ferry dock in the late afternoon when three ferries travel across Puget Sound.  This view was from the deck of the third ferry.  The sun hits the hills and turns the shadows a beautiful lavender.  This painting is available at Silverwood Gallery on Vashon during May and June.

Gold Rims SOLD

These were painted at a workshop taught by Carol Marine whose work I greatly admire.  I spent almost as much time setting up the still life as I spent painting it.  I liked the sparkle on the gold rims.

Two Eggplants Pewter Bowl SOLD

The eggplants came from Uwajimaya's grocery in Seattle.  I liked the vertical stance of the eggplant but it kept falling over, so I propped it up with a little bit of double sided sticky tape.

Surf

The waves at the ocean shore are bigger and start farther from shore than the waves in Puget Sound.  Since the dominant hue in this painting is blue green I first underpainted this canvas in orange. That allows the underpainting to peek through in broken strokes and adds an exciting sparkle.  This painting is at Silverwood Gallery during May and June.

Power Lines SOLD

Sometimes a painting is just something ordinary, but seen in a new light.  I lived in the midwest for a long time and saw these power lines when I was back for a visit.  The poles towered over the landscape and the lines stretched as far as you could see.  The evening sun made the clouds dramatic and gave a golden glow to the bare fields.

Oceanside Beach SOLD

Beach, cliffs, sunshine, blue water, a perfect cool day at the beach along the Oregon coast.  This painting is at Silverwood gallery during May and June.

"Smoke and Steam"

The subject is the Tacoma Pulp Mill in Commencement Bay.  It's an industrial sight, but rendered soft and beautiful by the steam.  The moisture in the air creates aerial perspective and turns the distant hills blue.  This painting is at the Silverwood Gallery in May and June

"Woods Near Ridgefield"

This backlit scene was near Ridgefield Washington on the Columbia River.  The trees were glowing from warm late afternoon sunlight.  The scene had a nice balance of lights, darks, and mid tones and gave an opportunity to explore warm and cool colors.  This painting is in the Silverwood Gallery during May and June.

"Island in the Columbia"

This is near Kalama Washington.   It's an island created by a channel of the Columbia - seen from the highway.  The late afternoon sun catches the tops of the trees and makes the distant hills disappear into the sky.  This painting is at the Silverwood Gallery on Vashon in May and June

"Blue Smoke and Madronas"

The madronas are in our yard.  We built a bonfire to burn some Scotch broom that we had cleared.   The smoke drifted through the trees and turned the air blue and smokey.  This painting is in the Silverwood  Gallery on Vashon during May and June.

"Sunny Day Ninilchik Church" SOLD

Because this was a small painting I left out a great deal of information, i.e. the windows in the church, the fence around the graveyard.  And I simplified the composition: a big piece of middle value, smaller piece of light value, and just a touch of dark value to focus on.   This is the Russian Orthodox church in Ninilchik, Alaska.
