Three Orange Tomatoes at Vashon Island Art Studio Tour

These three dramatic tomatoes are lined up to take a bow.  I like the large amount of yellow green balanced by the contrasting orange and red. Lush lighting provides exciting shadows and reflections. White Daisies on Turquoise

A bouquet of spring daisies against a blue green background.  Painted when the daisies first appeared this summer.  I like the turquoise and blue and green.  The analagous colors create harmony which is punctuated by the bright gold centers.

Daisies on Blue Stripes

Blue feels so summery, the color of the sky, a lake or the ocean.  Daisies are a great early summer flower, they grow on the edges of the roads and in the ditches in my neighborhood.  The spot of gold in the centers of the flower complements the blues in the teapot and in the background.  12 x 12 framed, at my ETSY store

On the Pickleforks

The pickleforks are the two narrow walkways above the loading ramps of the Washington ferries.  Passengers can stroll and sun and catch a lot of breeze, and look for whales and sea lions and pirates.  Painted from photos I took myself, though I admit I was inspired by the work of Alex Colville. This painting will be in my show at the Vashon Center for the Arts, Summer Arts Fest.  Oil on panel 10" x 20."  My show will be up July 31 through August 12, and the opening is August 2, 6-9 p.m.  You're invited.

Sailboats in Quartermaster

A Sunny day painting of the view from Burton to West Seattle.  Sailboats anchor in Quartermaster Harbor; fluffy clouds dot the turquoise sky, and the dark green trees of portage bring drama to the scene.  24" x 24" oil on panel.  This painting will be in my show at the Summer Art Fest at the Vashon Center for the Arts 19600 Vashon Hwy SW, Vashon, WA 98070.  The show opens Friday August 2; the reception is 6 to 9.  I hope to see you there.

VIVA Membership show at Hardware Store SOLD

A bouquet of late summer cosmos and zinnias gathered from our garden.  The light was placed directly overhead and added dramatic lighting to the bright pinks and reds.  Painting light reds can be a fun challenge.  If you add white to the mixture to make the red light, it turns a pasty pink, not at all like the intense red of the velvety zinnias.  I borrow a technique from watercolor and  paint the bright reds with transparently to allow the light of the painting panel to brighten the color.
This painting will be in the VIVA members show at the Hardware Store restaurant on Vashon.  The show opens on Friday June 7 from 6-9 p.m. The address is 17601 Vashon Hwy SW.

Lemons on Turquoise - SOLD at the Spring Art Tour

It's time for the Spring Art Tour.   I like the saturated colors and shiny reflections in this one.  The turquoise and yellow dominate, but area of lavender-blue in the background keeps it from feeling like just a one-note song.  On display at Dockton Pottery 25913 99th Ave SW in Dockton just opposite the old Dockton Store - May 4 & 5 and 11 & 12 from 10 to 5.

Eggplant Painting in Spring Art Tour

Eggplant is one of my favorite vegetables.  Not just for eating, but also because the color is so deep and wonderful to paint.  This painting is very simple, but such lovely reflections.   This one will be at the Vashon Island Art Studio Tour during the first two weekends in May.  I'll be showing paintings at Dockton Pottery, 25913 99th Ave SW opposite the old Dockton Store.  Stop # 23 on the map.  Click here for a printable map

Clementine and Teapot on Black, Dramatic Orange

I wanted the clementine to shine, so I put a spotlight overhead and stuck the black teapot in dark shadow.  Just a bit of reflection and a few highlights add great drama.  This one will be at the Spring Studio Tour.  I'll be showing paintings at Dockton Pottery, 25913 99th Ave SW, stop # 23 on the Tour. Maps are available at http://vivartists.com/viva/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Printable-Map.pdf.  The first two weekends in May, put it on your calendar.  Come see the art.

White Camellias in a Jelly Jar

The Camellia Sasanqua starts blooming in December and sometimes blooms all winter.  This year the cold snap in February put an end to the parade of fragrant white blossoms.  I like the soft petals against the stiff waxy leaves. On my ETSY store.

Camellias on Turquoise SOLD

6 x 6 original oil painting of a bouquet of this winter's Camellia sasanqua in a glass jelly jar. The flowers not only bloom in winter (in December and January), but they also have a delightful fragrance. I like the stiff waxy leaves against the soft single petals.  On my ETSY store

Ferry at Fauntleroy SOLD

The Fauntleroy Ferry dock in West Seattle with a ferry loading and offloading cars, trucks and passengers.  The western sun puts a shine on the water, dissolves the distant shore in a pale haze and throws most of the ferry into shadow.  I like the reflections and movement in the water.

Blake Island Sunset

A view of sunset across Puget Sound.   Blake Island is silhouetted in the foreground and the Olympic Mountains are hidden by low clouds.  Painted from photos I took while traveling on the Vashon-Fauntleroy ferry.  On my ETSY store
