Art Studio Tour THIS WEEKEND

It's going to be a beautiful weekend for a drive - Come to Dockton on Vashon Island and see the art. Five different artists, pottery, stained glass, jewelry, weaving and PAINTING. 

Glass Jar and Crocuses

We have been having warm weather while the rest of the country is inundated in blizzards and snow.  Here the crocuses are blooming.  My daughter planted lots of bulbs from tiny species flowers to these giant hybrids.  I put a shield above the still life to throw a shadow across the background.  The lights hit the front of the vase and the tops of the petals and make interesting shadows on the tabletop.

White Crocus, Jelly Jar on Gray

The white crocus are over, this is the last in the series and it's time for daffodils.  I like the intense top light which makes the tabletop such a lovely yellow green.

Inspired by the single crocus painting,  I hunted for a few more crocus and tried a different shape jar.  I like the lights and darks in the petals; warm in the light and cool in the shadow.

I didn't change the pose, just the background.  The colors are harmonious because there's a lot of yellow green in the gray.  It's fun to see how just changing one small thing makes such a big difference.

This crocus was uprooted in the late winter cleaning of the flower bed. I popped the flower into a small glass jar of water and then decided to paint it.  This was painted on a smooth gessoboard panel which allows me to wipe out the light colors of the stems in the water.
