6 x 12 original oil painting of two Puget Sound ferries at the north end ferry dock on Vashon Island. Late afternoon sun peeks under clouds and lights the sides of the ferries but leaves the hills dark in shadow. On my Etsy Store

Big Sky, Ferry Passing Blake Island

12x12 original oil painting of the Vashon-Southworth-Fauntleroy ferry passing between Vashon Island and Blake Island.  Broken clouds and haze keep the sky light and the ferryboat is backlit by the afternoon sun. I like the mood of the painting: big sky, tranquil water, distant ferryboat, sun and clouds; life seems to move at a different pace.  On my ETSY store

Two Northend Ferries SOLD

Southworth Ferry Against A Dark Green Hill

I had a view of the Southworth Ferry from the hilltop on Pallisades Avenue at Vashon Heights. From that height the ferryboat looked like a toy as it pulled in and out of the dock.  The late afternoon sun threw a shadow across the hills behind the ferry landing and from the distance the water looked smooth and tranquil.  On my ETSY store

Southworth Ferry and Brown Hill SOLD

12 x 12 original oil seascape painting of the Southworth ferry in front of a dark hill on the Kitsap Peninsula.  Late afternoon light bathes the ferry in yellow and turns the sky orange.  Painted from photographs I took on location.  On my ETSY store

Ferry with Glare

12 x 12 original oil painting of the Vashon Fauntleroy Southworth Ferry as it heads across Puget Sound into the glare of the sun.  Ferries are a favorite subject of mine and I especially like them with the sparkling water.   I like how the bright sun throws everything into dark or light, obscures details  and simplifies broad areas.  Painted from photographs I took on location.  On my Etsy store

Vashon Ferry at the North End Dock SOLD

I walked a little ways down Bunker Trail to get this view of the North End ferry at Vashon.  The view is north towards Blake Island and the Kitsap Peninsula.  Late afternoon sunlight lights up the ferry against the blue water. In my ETSY shop.

Green-Brown Smoke Ferry SOLD

A painting of the Vashon Ferry against a green-brown hillside. The ferry is pulling away from the shore late in the late afternoon and the smoke from its engines softens the hillside. Yellow sunlight lights up the side of the ferry and the smokestacks.  This painting is at a fund-raising auction for O Space on Vashon "The Golden Age of Mardi Gras Fundraiser & Auction" on Friday Feb 8

Blue Green Ferry SOLD

What is more Vashon than the Ferry?  We all use it, some of us every day.  It is a relaxing mini cruise or a source of aggravating frustration.  You have to be a special kind of person to live on an island.  This one will be in a showing at Vashon Center for the Arts during Summer Arts Fest.  My show will be from July 5 thru July 23.  VCA is open every day during July & August except Independence Day.

A summer evening when the light is low and warm.  Solid hills become insubstantial and the ferry takes on a different color.  A view looking west toward Southworth.  This painting will be at  Dockton Pottery, stop #12 on the Vashon Island Artist Studio Tour the first two weekends in December.  See you there 25913 99th Ave SW, Vashon, WA.

Late afternoon sun throws a shadow across the hills at Southworth.  A spot of sunshine lights up the end of the ferry and makes the view more dramatic.  A view of the Vashon-Fauntleroy-Southworth ferry as seen from the water of Puget Sound.

Ferry Brown Hill Lavender Water

The long summer twilight paints the ferry with warm yellow light and turns the hills behind a warm brown color.  Another painting of the ferry on the run between Vashon, Fauntleroy, and Southworth.  Painted from photos I took on location.  On my ETSY store:  http://gretchenhancock.etsy.com
