Six Green Onions on Turquoise - Scallions in light and shadow - Spring Onions - Kitchen Vegetable Art SOLD
These scallions are from the grocery store and have short stubby roots. The ones we grow in the garden have long tresses that are difficult to paint--it's too easy to get caught in the details and try to paint every root hair. So I actually like the store-bought ones better (for painting, anyway). On my ETSY store

Green Onions on Gray
Scallions on a light gray tabletop with a darker gray shadow across. Even though the tabletop is gray, I see green and purple and gold in the neutral grays. When arranging the scallions I try to come up with a good division of space and some interesting shapes.

Red Scallions
We are growing red cipollini onions in the garden. I picked this bunch before they got large because I thought they'd be exciting to paint. I like the bright red plum color.

Onions in a Jar
These little red cipollini onions can be picked before the bulb is large and used as scallions. I kept them in a jar with just a little bit of water until I could get around to painting them. Then I realized that the jar of onions was an interesting subject and so I painted that.

Spring Onions
Kassana from Bergamot Home asked for paintings of spring things - bulbs and buds and new growth. So I found these lovely green onions. I remember eating the early garden vegetables as a child: green onions and radishes with salt. This painting will be at Bergamot Home through April.

Green Onions on Blue
Analogous colors (yellow-green, blue-green and turquoise) are very harmonious. The touches of pink shadows and gold roots keep the painting from being boring.

Green Onions on Lavender with Shadow
Our garden is slowing way down for the season, so these fresh green onions came from the store. I like the harmony of lavenders and greens. The little touch of sienna on the root hairs completes the secondary triad of purple, green, and orange.
