Silver Pot and Oranges in Side Light SOLD

This shiny silver pot is such a good subject for reflections.  I used a shield to throw a shadow across the left side of the still life. The shadows add more drama and make the highlights more exciting.  I especially like the red reflection on the rim of the lid.  This painting will be in the Vashon Art Studio Tour the first two weekends in May.  Link to map of Vashon Spring Art Tour  I will be showing my paintings at Stop # 23 in Dockton.  See you there!  In the meantime, this painting is at my ETSY store

Silver Bowl, Lemons, Lavender -giveaway!

This week I'm the Daily Paintworks featured artist!  I'll be giving away this lovely painting of "Silver Bowl, Lemons, Lavender" to a person who has been a Daily Paintworks buyer during the last 30 days.  Daily Paintworks is a website for artists who paint and blog on a daily basis (or nearly daily basis).  There is a gallery of each day's work and links to individual artists and their stores.  Here's the link

Two Tangerines on Brown

Tangerines are a favorite subject, especially when I'm in the grocery store looking at the gorgeous contrast between the fresh leathery green leaves and the bumpy orange skin.  I always have good intentions when I buy them, but somehow it takes me days to get around to painting them, and by that time the leaves are starting to brown and curl up.  These were fortunately painted within the first day or two of acquisition.  A lot of the lights in the tabletop were done by wiping out.  I use a smooth gessoboard from Ampersand which allows me to work back into painted areas and lighten and remove pigment.

Two Vashon Ferries SOLD

Two ferries at the Vashon north end ferry dock.  The sky is dark, and leaves the hillside in shadow, but sunlight hits the two ferries at the end of the dock.  12" x 24" oil on panel.  This one will be in the Vashon Island Art Studio Tour, #9 on the map at Plum Lodge BnB, 14210 SW Reddings Beach Road.  Click here for map  Hope to see you there

Silver Bowl Lemons Lavender

Another painting of a bowl of lemons, this time on a lavender tabletop.  I placed the bowl on a piece of glass on top of a sheet of paper.  There are some lovely reflections in the silver bowl.
On my ETSY store.

Ferry From Southworth SOLD

Sun shines through the clouds and turns the water silver-blue-gray.  This is a view of the north end ferry as it crosses in front of Blake Island on the trip from Southworth to Fauntleroy in Puget Sound.

Evening Vashon Ferry

A late afternoon view of the Vashon-Fauntleroy-Southworth ferry at the north end of Vashon.  Light  touches the ferry at the end of the dock, but leaves the hill in shadow.

Three Orange Tomatoes

Most of the tomatoes are over, but the cherry tomatoes are still producing.  These orange tomatoes have lovely sharp leaves and saturated color.

Dappled Madronas

One of my favorite subjects: the madronas in my yard, with a view towards Talequah. A large painting with a strong green-gold hue dominating much of the painting.  I like the sense of light.  Painted in my studio.

Yellow Sunflowers on Gold

How much more of this gorgeous weather can we take?  The sunflowers are begging me to paint them.  And the dahlias and cosmos and bachelors buttons and calendulas.  Thank goodness, the daisies are spent!

10" x 10" oil on panel

Daisies in a Square Glass Jar on Burnt Sienna SOLD

The daisies come from my garden and threaten to overrun it.  What can I do but ruthlessly cut them and paint them and paint them.  Lots of paintings.

Artichoke on Plum and Brown

Another one of Joe's artichokes.  I like the cool lavenders in the shadows, and the warm yellow greens where the light shines through the leaves.

Radish Redo

New Version.
I made some changes to a painting I recently posted.  Here is the new version of Two Radishes on Gold and Brown.  As you can see, no more gold.  I felt that all the saturated colors were fighting with each other - what was more important the red radishes or the gold tabletop?  So I tamed down the gold - What's your opinion?

Two Radishes on Brown and Gold

The last of the radish paintings until a new crop comes in.  This time against a warm brown background.  I think the leaves turned out well.

Pale Iris on Brown SOLD

I love the big shapes of bearded iris. Even though they are delicate, they have a great structure which makes them fun to paint.  And they hold a pose well!  I like the suggestion of the beard against the brown.

White and Yellow Daffodils on Brown

It was late and I needed to get out of the studio so I gave myself just an hour to paint this one.  No fussing, no adjusting, just leave it alone.  And I think it turned out better than the ones I labor over.  I like the waterline in the glass jar.

Single Pomegranate

I haven't eaten one of these since I was ten,  so it was time to try one.  I split one open, but the seeds were hard and not as juicy and gelatinous as I'd expected.  Was it underripe? or stored too long and dried up?
I like the luscious colors and the lost and found edges.

Yellow Pepper on Brown

This yellow pepper is lit on the back and the side leaving just a narrow rim of bright color.  The color in this painting is limited but the bits of red and green make this painting more interesting.  A very dramatic presentation.
